She studies in the Kiran village as they provide her with transport. The bus provided by Kiran has a ramp facility and so she can use it with a wheelchair. She studied till class 8 at the integrated school and went on to complete intermediate education through National Institute of Open School (NIOS).

Gyanda has now completed her Masters in Social Work (MSW) through IGNOU and is an active member of the social sector. This growth for Gyanda has been only made possible because of the transport provided.

Program Description

KIRAN aspires to empower differently able children and young adults in partnership with their parents, by providing a quality service to them without discrimination of caste, religion or financial circumstance. In order to the beneficiaries to avail there services, KIRAN provides free transport facility to all children.

Every year, more than 350 physically disabled children and young adults get special education and vocational training. KIRAN is situated outside varanasi where there is no proper public transport facility available. Most of the students come from a 30 km radius. The transport facility fetches them from their homes and drops them back.

Six Buses ply to transport children to school every working day. This facility can sometimes be the difference between illiteracy and education for a challenged child. This becomes the very reason for their self-reliance. Donate to this program so a challenged-child can get access to transportation to school.

Kiran Society

Kiran Society was founded in Varanasi by a small group of people from various social, cultural, and religious backgrounds based on the idea of supporting differently-able and disadvantaged children and youngsters and enriching their talents and abilities.Shifting their base to the outer village of Modhpur, the center functions as a small village where the differently abled children receive holistic treatment through education, skills and vocational training and physical and medical rehabilitation.

Their belief in the potential of the children to lead normal lives has enabled them to encourage family involvement in assisting the children and youngsters suffering from the afflictions of polio, cerebral palsy, rickets and/or hearing impairments. Their 190 strong staff members have helped more than 110 disabled children in receiving regular therapy, 280 malnourished children receiving supplementary food and 80 admissions of differently-abled youth in training programs.

Their efforts echoed in the society when the NGO was awarded the Lokmat Samman in Lucknow, UP for educating children with disability. Total number of beneficiaries impacted - 270, in the location Madhopur in Varanasi

Challenges faced and next steps

50 new beneficiaries enrolled in academic year 2022-23. No new location was tapped in last year. The Kiran Society's transport support has been a game-changer for students with disabilities, opening up several opportunities that were previously out of reach. By providing accessible transportation, the Kiran Society has increased access to education for students who may have faced transportation barriers otherwise. Additionally, the transport service has enabled students to engage with their peers outside of school, increasing socialization and community engagement. Finally, by providing accessible transportation, the Kiran Society is helping students gain greater independence, which is an essential factor in their overall well-being and success. Overall, the transport support provided by the Kiran Society is an excellent example of how small initiatives can make a big difference in the lives of students with disabilities. " During period of July to December 2022, Eid, Children's day celebration, Independence day and Disability day program were organised. Sports and cultural programs were presented by the children in these programs.

Stories from the ground

Aakriti Yadav, a bright and determined student in class 6, was diagnosed with cerebral palsy. Aakriti has had to overcome physical limitations that have made everyday tasks difficult. But with the help of transport facilities for students with disabilities, Aakriti has been able to pursue her education. Every day, Aakriti wakes up early and gets ready for school. With the help of her family, she boards the Kiran Society's transport vehicle, which has been specially designed to accommodate students with disabilities. Aakriti feels safe and comfortable in the vehicle. Outside of school, Aakriti is an active participant in the Kiran Society's programs, which include art classes, and music therapy. She loves to paint and draw. Aakriti is also learning basic computer skills, which she hopes will help in her future studies and career. Despite the challenges she faces, Aakriti remains positive and determined.

Activities and work undertaken in the last 5-6 months

Four buses were receiving and dropping children from all corners of Varanasi city. Our buses have special provisions to ensure the safety of the children having the consequences of disability. All buses have specially trained conductors along with the drivers to support the boarding and stepping down of the children. This facilitates parents and caregivers to avail of these services at their doorsteps and not to carry children to the organization which is situated 20 kilometres away from the city, in rural demography. This helped children to continue their education and therapy on regular basis and helped them to have holistic development of children in need.

Challenges faced and next steps

Uttar Pradesh government closed all schools because of the winter season in January month, so KIRAN school teachers continued their teaching through online. This project supports part of the total project and thus we have used the fund in the month of February 2022.

Stories from the ground

Shruti lives in a normal family with her parents and younger brother. In the year 2017, Shruti was enrolled in the special education unit of Kiran School. At that time, when Shruti was enrolled in Kiran, her activities related to reading, writing and social etiquettes were under developed. Initially, she did not like to sit in the class for long and kept herself separate from the group. Another problem with her was that her parents were not quite ready to admit their child in a school. Due to no connection with society and the environment, often she was getting health issues due to weak immunity. After working with Shruti for about two years, many developments like sitting in the class according to the prescribed timetable and following the class rules, playing in a group has been observed in her. At present, Shruti helps her mother in her household activities. She manages her own household activities very well and needs very little help for this. This change was only possible in her due to access of transport facility under this project.

Activities and work undertaken in the last 5-6 months

The offline classes for upper primary and NIOS resumed with parental consent, followed by primary classes in the first week of September. All needy students were supported by the transport facilities through different modified buses. Distribution of stationary items and dry ration In the third week of August, stationery items were distributed to all students, and 272 packets of dry ration were distributed to needy students, which were worth 1000 INR each. A parents’-teachers' meeting is held to discuss the academic and behavioral condition of the students. They also suggested taking precautions to avoid any contact with the coronavirus. Around 275 parents, along with their children, attended the parents-teachers meeting successfully. An internal assessment of the students took place to check their academic progress. Following the exposure trip of students, following the COVID-19 guidelines, the students visited the important local places in Varanasi and Prayagraj in small groups. The teachers chose the places for the visit according to the academic level and importance for the student's group. Children's Day and International Day for People with Special Needs are celebrated in Kiran. The purpose of these celebrations was to create awareness for people with special needs and to promote inclusive education. A general public awareness program on disability and inclusive education was held through which several workshops were held in Kiran premises and some local schools in Varanasi. Around 350 students were sensitized in local schools along with their teachers. In Kiran premises, around 600 college students along with a group of 25 teachers were sensitized on the above topic in several workshops.

Challenges faced and next steps

Parents were not sure whether to send children to the school and were not ready to give their consent for the same. The poor economic condition of many students has an adverse effect on their health. Many parents did not give consent to send their children to physical classes. They joined the classes only in the first week of October, when it was made compulsory for all students. Therefore, they needed revision of the lessons as well. When the students came to school, they found they were below the expected academic level and had some behavioral issues as well, which the help of teachers, parents, and concerned people tackled wisely.

Stories from the ground

Nihal Yadav was accompanied by his mother in Kiran Society in March 2015 (at the age of four years) with the chief complaints of being unable to stand and walk independently and also being unable to use his right hand. His mother was in distress about the future of her child. He belongs to a poor socio-economic background. When he came to Kiran at that time, it was found by his physical examination that he had tightness in his hamstring, elbow flexor, pronator, wrist, and finger flexor muscles. He was dependent for activities of daily living. Then he was diagnosed as a right hemiplegic CP. Nihal was dependent on caregivers for mobility. He had limited ability to maintain sitting posture with limited ability to control leg and arm movement. The expert team decided to start working on his ADL, joint ROM (UL/LL), and mobility, and their intervention started. With the help of proper intervention services, he was able to sit independently on a chair, his hand function improved, and he was also under the medication of a neurologist. The therapist worked on his muscle strengthening exercises, gait training, standing with minimal support, and hand function activities. The therapist started to make him walk with the proper rehabilitation plan. He got admission to Kiran’s inclusive school and he also continued his physiotherapy services, through which his academic and physical development parallels kept going on.

Activities and work undertaken in the last 5-6 months

We have reached 250 beneficiaries with and without disabilities with dry ration, nutritional 7 hygiene kit support in the mentioned time period. 62 beneficiaries were supported making the DBM(Direct benefit transfer) to their respective bank account. This was a great support for them to fulfill their need during the Covid pandemic.

Challenges faced and next steps

Distribution of dry ration and hygiene kits at the doorstep of the beneficiaries was a challenge for the concerned staff as they had feared to go into the community and the families had also feared allowing people from outside to enter the community. An orientation and guideline workshop was organized for the concerned staff and a protocol was fixed for the distribution team and beneficiaries were also briefed over the phone for maintaining the distance and used masks at the time of distribution.

Stories from the ground

Impact story: Lucky is a child with cerebral palsy belonging to a lower-middle-class family. During the Covid-19 pandemic, his father, who used to work as a salesman in a shop, lost his job, leaving the family with dire problems to earn a living. The economic condition of the house was not such that the family could be maintained without any employment. In such a situation, Lucky's family, with the help of some of his affluent relatives, supported the family for a few days. In such a critical situation, our Kiran Society, distributed dry ration and hygiene kits to the families affected by this epidemic, especially the families of children with disabilities, and cash assistance was distributed to some very poor families. Through this, such families can arrange food for themselves in this critical time. Which proved to be a life saver for him.

Inclusion of one and all

KIRAN Integrated School is located in a village outside the city. This school is mostly attended by children from families with low economic background in the city or village. KIRAN arranges a better transport facility for these children keeping in mind their condition. KIRAN has arranged buses equipped with surveillance camera and GPS system to take care of the safety of the bus as well as children in an emergency. In the last quarter, KIRAN organised a musical program ‘Swar Yatra’ on 24th January and KIRAN Foundation Day on 27th January, in which our transport system contributed immensely to make the program successful.

Story from the field

Amreshwar is a male child with hearing impairment. He belongs to a family with very poor economic background. Amreshwar has three brothers and two sisters. His father is a single parent who works as a mechanic. One brother of Amreshwar is severely sick and needs medical treatment on a regular basis. He is also a student at KIRAN.

Amreshwar joined KIRAN in 2013, when he was five years old. In the beginning, he was a very shy introvert. He had major problems in following classes and focussing on studies. A major change in Amreshwar's life occurred in 2017, when he got a cochlea implant.

He lives in Varanasi, therefore he uses the transport services. With the transport service, he is able to come to school on a regular basis. This is also helpful for his father, since he can go to work peacefully without worrying about Amreshwar would reach school. He has problems with concentrating in class due to which he struggles in academics. However since he comes school on regular basis, it has helped him in making slow but gradual progress. Major positive changes has occurred in Amreshwar. His behaviour has changed over the time, he was very passive and introvert now he participates actively on the playground and in the classes.
