Challenges faced and next steps

The year saw an all time high in the number of applications - around 400, in response to our advertisements placed on reputed newspapers. We have distributed approximately Rs 30 lakhs by way of scholarships to needy girl students - the biggest amount disbursed by us so far. We have distributed to around 287 students. For the first time we decided to introduce career counselling especially for the 10th std students as well as undergraduates to make them aware of the various career options available to them. True to this, we had the first one on 8th Sept 2022 for 10th std students wherein we had invited Career Counselors from Banjara Academy to address the students on the various career choices available to them. We had one more for the undergraduates conducted by Brain Mapping and career counselor.

Activities and work undertaken in the last 5-6 months

Firmly believing that education has the power to change a woman’s life and thereby lead to an overall improvement in society, we at the Samiti decided to champion the future generation of women through education by granting scholarships to deserving meritorious girl students from the economically disadvantaged sections of Society through an annual scholarship program.

The academic year 2021-22 saw a large number students responding to our advertisements published in both the English and Kannada newspapers inviting applications from deserving students for financial assistance. We received over 200 applications. This time due to the 2nd wave of Covid, many exams were either postponed or cancelled. This led to a delay in the announcement of results. As such the entire process of scholarship distribution was delayed. They met to understand the amount available for disbursement as well as the amount to be disbursed to students belonging to the different streams of education. The Committee met several times to screen the applications received. This was followed by interviews.

This year a total of 197 students were granted scholarships, the highest ever so far. A sum of Rs. 28,06,000.00 was distributed by way of scholarships. A noticeable trend observed by us this year was the desire and willingness of students to move away from the usual college degrees and pursue professional courses mainly engineering which would enable them to technically qualify for good jobs and become financially independent. We would like to express gratitude to our donors who have partnered with us in making this program a success. Our beneficiaries are able to grow closer to their career goals, achieve their ambitions and fulfil their dreams with the help of your support.

We at the Samiti are happy to have made a meaningful contribution in their march towards financial independence and thereby to a better India. As we all know it is not how much we give but how much love we put into the giving is what matters.

Challenges faced and next steps

This time due to the second wave of Covid, as also with many exams being either postponed or cancelled there was an inordinate delay in the announcement of results. on account of which there was a delay in the scholarship distribution program. There were many challenges that the scholarship committee faced due to this. The committee met several times to screen the applications received as well as to decide on the amount to be disbursed to the students belonging to the different streams of education. Word got around and we started receiving more than 50 applications each from individual colleges itself which made the selection process extremely difficult. Our scholarship committee took extreme care to sift out the most needy to these candidates. A difficult task indeed. We normally do not like to reject candidates but we had to do so based on the funds available with us.

She lost her mother when she was two. She had appealed to us for help as her ambition was to be “ a skillful engineer and serve society”. We are proud to say that we are been granting scholarship to her for the last 7 years. She is now placed at cognizant Technology company. She has been selected by one of the top university in Canada to her Masters's . She will be leaving shortly to Canada to pursue the same. Activities and work undertaken in the last 5-6 months

Our prime focus has been the education of the girl child as we firmly believe that education is the key to empowerment. ‘Strengthen the female mind by educating it and there will be an end to blind obedience.’-Anonymous. When you educate a girl child, you educate an entire family, the community and in the larger context the nation. We believe that education has the power to change a woman’s life and thereby lead to an overall improvement in society. As such we champion the future generation of women through education by granting scholarships to meritorious girl students from the economically disadvantaged sections of society to enable them to pursue their dreams. We normally start our Scholarship Project by May every year, but this year due to Covid and its aftermath, we could start the process only in September. Advertisements were put out in all the major newspapers both in English as well as the local language, Kannada and applications were invited from needy meritorious girl students. Our Scholarship Committee met often and scrutinized the applications minutely. Scholastic abilities, financial status, family background, the health status of parents due to which they are unable to contribute to the family income are some of the criteria taken into consideration while granting scholarships to these students. Interviews were conducted and home visits by the Committee members and staff were conducted to check the veracity of their claims. This year we have granted scholarships to about 196 students. We have disbursed Rs.27, 99,000/- as a scholarship to needy students. This has indeed been the achievement of a milestone as this is the highest we have given so far by way of scholarships. Thanks to all our donors (Give India as well as other donors) and patrons for their magnanimous contributions, as a result of which we were able to reach out and enable many more needy students in the pursuit of their dreams.

Challenges faced and next steps

Covid and its aftermath have had a cascading effect on the implementation of all our programs or initiatives. This year due to the second wave and its after-effects there was a delay and in some cases cancellation of examinations by the Education Department. As a result, there was a delay even in the declaration of results as well as admissions for the next academic year. Some of the exams were held as late as July, August. We normally start our Scholarship process in May wherein we start by releasing advertisements in all the major newspapers inviting applications from needy girl students both from Bangalore Urban as well as Rural. This year we could start the process only on September, 21 due to the aforementioned reasons.

Case Study of Ms Chaitra M.S This is the case study of Ms Chaitra who has completed her Engineering degree course from M.S.Ramiah Institute of Technology and has been successfully placed in DRDO. We are thrilled as she had approached us way back in 2017 and we have funded her entire degree course. Her father is a retired employee and her mother is a homemaker. The sole earning member is an elder brother who draws a meagre salary of Rs. 12,000/- per month which can hardly substantiate their daily needs. As such, she had approached us for financial assistance. We helped her accordingly. Today she is extremely grateful to us for enabling her to achieve her dreams. We wish her the best in all her future endeavours.

  2. Case Study of Ms Sinchana D.R. This is the success story of Ms Sinchana who has completed her B.E in Computer Science and is a qualified engineer today. She also has a younger sister pursuing her first year of B.E. Both the girls are academically inclined and wish to pursue further studies. As such, she had approached us for financial assistance to enable her to complete her degree. As such we have been instrumental in funding her Engineering studies. Today she has completed her B.E from Gitam Institute of Technology and is on the lookout for a job. She is eternally grateful to us for all the help received. We sincerely hope she gets a good job and is economically self-reliant soon.

Activities and work undertaken in the last 5-6 months

Our prime focus has been an education for the girl child as we firmly believe that education is the key to empowerment. As such we support and champion the future generation of women through education by granting scholarships to meritorious girl students from the marginalized sections of society through an annual scholarship program. We wish to encourage these girls to counter financial constraints and pursue careers of their choice.Applications are invited by putting out advertisements both in 'Deccan Herald' in English and ‘Prajawani’ in Kannada. We have a scholarship committee in place which screens these applications. Interviews are then conducted. Home visits are also done to check the veracity of their claims. Scholastic abilities, financial status, family background, the health status of parents due to which they are unable to contribute to the family exchequer are some of the criteria taken into account while screening the applications. Priority is given to follow up students or continuation students who have already been granted financial aid the previous years to enable them to continue their studies to their logical end. Fresh applications are also screened and scholarship is granted to deserving students. We receive applications from students from Bangalore urban and rural areas.

Challenges faced and next steps

Due to the pandemic COVID-19 and the ensuing lockdown, we have faced a lot of challenges in the implementation of the program. Schools and colleges were closed indefinitely. There seemed to be a lot of uncertainty regarding the re-opening of schools and colleges. Exams were either postponed or cancelled altogether. Results have just been declared for some courses. This being the case we have just put out advertisements in newspapers and are receiving a lot of applications for the same. The scholarship committee has just started screening the applications received so far. As such it will take at least 2-3 months to complete the process of disbursement of scholarships to needy students. We would like to reach out to as many needy students as possible to enable them to pursue their dreams.

Token of appreciation for the deserving

At Mahila Dakshata Samiti, we have a committee to facilitate the award of scholarships, which meets at the beginning of the academic year to discuss and finalise the procedure for selection of awardees and set up other processes. Once the results are announced, we post ads in the local newspapers calling for applications for the scholarship awards.
The Committee scrutinizes the applications in detail and calls eligible students along with their parents for an interview. The committee tries to find out about the candidate’s interests, ambitions and future plans. Latest fee receipts and marks, report cards are examined. Depending on the available funds, a base amount is fixed for 10th class, for 1st and 2nd year of PUC, for Degree, for Diploma, Engineering and Medical courses.
This amount is enhanced marginally for students –
(i) With outstanding academic record,
(ii) With a single parent struggling to educate the girl child
(iii) For first-generation learners.
(iv) The amount is slightly decreased for students studying in Government colleges where the fee is comparatively low.
(v) The base-amount increases with the level of the class and is comparatively high for Engineering and Medical Courses.
Students in the second and later years are regarded as continuation scholars. We are extremely happy to note that continuation scholars generally show improvement in their academics and also seem to develop considerable self-confidence, as they move on; most likely emerging because of the monetary assistance provided by the Scholarship.
Some of the program highlights are that we have not only given financial aid to students pursuing engineering and medical streams, but also financial aid for the students pursuing their Diploma in Engineering course, Nursing , Radiology and Journalism.

Program Update

Our prime focus has been education of the girl child, as education is the key to empowerment.Keeping this in mind we have been providing scholarships to needy meritorious students from economically backward sections of society so as to enable them to pursue their dreams. As usual, this year too advertisements inviting applications for scholarships were put forth in English and kannada newspapers. The response was very good. There has been a steady increase in the number of students, who have recieved financial aid from the MDS, a big jump from 80 students in 2015-16 to 150 students in 2017-18. A point worthy of mention is that there has been a steady increase in the number of students pursuing professional courses applying for grants. The Scholarship committee goes through a lot of pain in selecting the most deserving candidates for the awarding of scholarships. Their scholastic abilities, financial status, family background such as orphans, children of single parent, health problems of parents due to which they are unable to contribute to the family exchequer, illiterate and semi-literate parents, students from rural areas and students who get admitted to Government colleges are some of the criteria taken into consideration while granting scholarships. This year too we have granted scholarships for about 140 students so far.

Story from the field

This is the success story of Ms. Aishwarya, who has completed her MBBS with our financial support and guidance. Her father had abondoned her and her mother, when she was a three months old child. Her mother is the sole earning member. She has single handedly brought Aishwarya up by working as a domestic help. All along she has been simple minded in her vision in providing Aishwarya with quality education, so that she does not have to endure hardships in life like her. Having successfully completed MBBS, today she is employed as an Assistant Doctor to a Sr. Doctor in ESIC Hospital. She and her mother are extreamly grateful to usfar the same.
