Adopt a grandparent by providing them monthly groceries

Thank you!

This program is fully funded because of donors like you.

Impact

Every monthly donation helps in feeding elderly citizens like Savitaben

Savitaben from Ambher, Gujrat is 78 years old. She lost her husband a few years ago and does not have any family to take care of her. Due to dire poverty, even at this age, she works as a domestic help to earn her living. With age not on her side, she could not work long hours.

This impacted her earning and she had to go hungry many times. Gram Vikas Trust (GVT) came to her aid and started to provide her with grocery rations monthly to secure her basic needs.

Savitaben is no longer helpless and feels taken care of. While she still works as a domestic help, she is not at the mercy of her job just for two meals a day.

She is completely dependent on beggary for food. Gajaraben says, I will be able to eat two times meal regularly for a month after receiving this ration kit. This kit will help me fill my stomach and I can sleep peacefully with full stomach. Due to old aged and no one from the family, her life is very difficult for the vulnerable part of the society. We can see that people who work for daily food are suffering very badly to survive. Gajaraben is also one of those who earns by doing some domestic work in the village. Dry ration kit has helped a poor lady to eat every day without thinking about what she will do today. This ration kit will help Gajaraben during the project period.

Activities and work undertaken in the last 5-6 months

Gram Vikas Trust, Bharuch distributes food kits to many elderlies. Out-migration is very common in the rural part of Bharuch as the younger generation migrates to the city for the purpose of livelihood. Therefore, the geriatric parents are left behind in their own house and they are not even taken care of. This is where GVT has come to the rescue of elderly people. It identifies the geriatric through intensive surveys. They are then given counselling sessions and their needs are understood in a better way. It provides them with nutrition food kits, after looking deeply into their food habits. They ensure enough food supplies and beneficiaries can utilise ration packets for a full month. Apart from the ration kits, GVT provides counselling to the elderly who suffers from the COVID-19 pandemic and encourage them for vaccination.

Challenges faced and next steps

Tracking elderly people was the most difficult task we faced. The usage of cell phones were significantly less in the elderly, and sometimes they migrated to different places. Therefore it created barriers to trace them during food kit distribution. Due to Covid-19, the arrangements for such a large group was very hard. With the help of the volunteers in each village, we had to monitor every old-age person. Recently, we have been planning to be in close contact with the teams. We have scheduled for the village level meeting regarding the necessary actions for the safety of our beneficiaries.

Stories from the ground

Bijuriben is an economically deprived woman living in impoverishment. She is a geriatric woman who lives in Navi Nagari faliya of Talodara located in the Bharuch district of Gujarat. She lives a very difficult life because she is deprived of necessities. Her children left her back in the village and they went to the city in search of a livelihood source. Bijuriben had no one to support her in any way. She did not have any documents like income certificates or caste certificates to avail the government welfare schemes. Today, she is happy that we are providing her food kits and she wishes to avail the benefits further. She is very scared to take the vaccination, but our team is counselling her to get vaccinated.

Activities and work undertaken in the last 5-6 months

Gram Vikas Trust distributes ration kits to many geriatric who is completely forsaken by the family. We have seen a pattern especially in the rural areas of Bharuch that generally young personals get educated and then migrate to the urban areas. Generally, the old parents are left behind in their own house and they are not even taken care of. This is where GVT comes in action, we have done very intensive surveys and made many research in identification of these geriatric who have been abundant by their family and are left as a widower. They are then provided with Counselling sessions and the need is identified, we provide them with the necessary nutrition after looking deeply into their local diet. They are given the ration packets that they utilise for a full month and they benefit from the same to maintain a healthy living. This particular time we also did a survey on the contamination of Covid 19 as well and also provided counselling on the Vaccination that has to be taken by them for their benefits. Most of our old age took vaccination after our intervention that we count as an achievement.

Challenges faced and next steps

Due to Covid-19 prevalence, it was difficult for us to make arrangements for such a large group of people and also to track them as most of them, do not use any technology and a few of them also moved from their villages to different places. Few of them also were diagnosed with Covid and they were provided with necessary information on how to take care of them so that they could be safe and can get well soon. We then used a mechanism where we were able to monitor every old person with the help of the volunteers that we have in each village. Soon, we are planning to be in close contact with the teams at the village level and take some necessary actions for the safety of our own beneficiaries. Also, a regular supply of the food kit would help them from overcoming the hunger that is forcing them to work as daily wage labour.

Stories from the ground

Story from the field

At the age of 68, Chauhan Ambubhai Sankarbhai lives with his old wife in dhobi Faliya of Amber village. He was blessed with three daughters and having no son was always his concern for retirement. As young and energetic he was a farmer and his wife was a helping hand to him in his occupation. His farming and other labor work did not pay him well to make a huge house for his family thus he kept on repairing his old house whenever there was a need or whenever there was his daughter's wedding. With all his sweat and blood he somehow made his daughters marry with all wishes of the grooms family fulfilled. From a phone, to a bike to a gold chain. All the sons-in-laws were never disappointed. Thus they were left with nothing at the end. It was observed that the nutrition intake of the family was so low that they could not even manage two time rice or roti for them. Sometimes they sleep without one time meal. Sometimes neighbours also provide meal again if they do some domestic work in their neighbour's house. This is where GVT intervened and provides basic food grains and other necessities to them so that he and his old wife can have daily food without much difficulties. Now the family is healthy and happy!
