Help a differently abled person walk by sponsoring a mobility aid

Thank you!

This program is fully funded because of donors like you.

Impact

Being able to move inspired Galamma to change her life.

Galamma worked in the coir industry. An unfortunate accident caused her to lose a leg and she could not work anymore.

Her life got even harder when her father died soon after. She was lost and in pain but refused to give up. She decided that she would do everything she could to help herself and her family.

She pushed herself to walk with the help of crutches. The government hospital that Galamma visited referred her to Uma Educational Trust and Society (UETS). The organization helped her by providing for her treatment. They also gave her an artificial leg.

Galamma began to feel more confident and decided to go back and finish her education. She not only finished her schooling but also graduated from college. She then enrolled for D.Ed in Special Education (Mental Retardation) at UETS.

Today, she is proud to be a Special Educator for intellectually challenged children. She is in awe of her own journey and believes that UETS and its donors made her dreams come true.

Women like Galamma have the courage and determination to win at life. You could help them by donating for mobility aids that keep them going. You can give with confidence because every program on our platform is GIVEASSURED.

Before one year i.e. on 2022, one of his finger from left leg got infected with some wound, and he is a diabetic patient from last 5 years. After using several medicines also it was not getting cured. Later on to stop spreading of infection to rest of the leg, his left leg has been amputed by the GGH Doctors Kakinada. Before the amputation, he was doing a daily wager works. In his family there are 5 members including him. His elder son is an auto driver and younger son is a daily wager. His both sons' income is also not sufficient for their family needs. Activities and work undertaken in the last 5-6 months

Uma Educational & Technical Society, Kakinada has been implementing the “District Disability Rehabilitation Centers (DDRCs)” Scheme of Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Government of India, New Delhi since April 2011 at East Godavari District, Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh. The present trend is away from hospital care (which is increasingly high-technology, intensive, with day care or short-stay treatment) to care ‘in the community’, usually at home. The emphasis has also been shifting from caring for people to helping them to become autonomous. The challenge of enabling persons with disabilities to live independently at home, involves detailed assessment, medical treatment, careful goal setting, rehabilitation techniques, guidance, support and the provision of suitable aids and appliances. The provision of suitable aids and appliances may help to restore people with disabling disorders to their optimum level of function and wellbeing and can improve the quality of life (which includes those things that make life worth living or which give fulfilment). The suitable aids and appliances can also help to improve functions — by allowing people to perform ‘basic’ activities, such as becoming mobile or self-caring or doing everyday tasks. We are carrying out DDRC camps with the coordination of government machinery and public continuously. We are coming across many disabled for whom the Assistive Devices are in need. It is noticed that there are many disabled through these camps and through our Mobile Workshop Van visit to Mandal Head Quarters.

Challenges faced and next steps

The identified beneficiaries are yet to be provided Aids & Appliances. We will the meet some of the requirement with GiveIndia Funds. It may be noted that East Godavari District has dense population and the disabled are more in number due to several reasons. We were provided a Mobile Workshop (Van) with well-equipped infrastructure for the purpose of fabrication, repairs and maintenance of Artificial Limbs and Calipers at door step services by M/s Reliance Industries Ltd. Gadimoga.

Stories from the ground

Mr. Tirlampudi Suryanarayana is a resident of Nagulapalli Village of U Kothapalli Mandal. 10 years ago while going to the paddy fields for farming one nail inserted itself into his right leg and he got injured. Later on pus formation happened. After consulting, the doctor suggested to remove the leg, because it had been infected. In order to stop spreading of infection all over the body they had to remove the leg. After amputation they suggested him to take artificial limb so that he would not be dependent anymore. His mother and father already died when he was small. His big brother raised him. He didn’t get married, yet he was staying with his big brother. This is the 2nd limb he received at free of cost with your support. Now he has a job at primary health care centre. He sincerely thanks the donor and the organization for their service towards bringing back mobility.

Stories from the ground

Mr. Goddu Veera Venkata Satyanarayana S/o G Srinivas aged 17 years is from Rajanagaram Village of Rajanagaram Mandal. He lost his right knee via accident when he was coming back from his village with his friend on a bike. They were driving fast when suddenly a lorry overtook them and they fell down. Then the other lorry went over his leg. He lost his leg below the knee and the doctors then amputed the remaining part of the leg to overcome the complications. He belongs to an upper middle-class family. His father is a carpenter. His parents were depressed because he is their only son. He is studying 10th class but he discontinued his school because of this accident. Kundela Butchibabu from his village referred him for an artificial limb. He was assessed by DDRC Professionals and prescribed accordingly. Within a week he received the limb free of cost with your contribution. Activities and work undertaken in the last 5-6 months

This organization is maintaining a Workshop (Immovable & Mobile) for fabrication/fitment of Assistive Devices. Through this workshop (Movable & Immovable) the organization is fabricating and fitment of assistive devices and providing to the needy Persons with Disabilities free of cost with the support of donors like you. We are conducting Screening & Assessment Camps for the identification of beneficiaries for Assistive Devices in all Revenue Mandals, East & West Godavari Districts of Andhra Pradesh. We are providing repair and maintenance of assistive devices that received them earlier. During this period we have not conducted any Screening & Assessment Camps at Field Level due to the intensity of Covid-19. We have provided Centre based services for Repairs and distribution of new Assistive Devices to PwDs identified in earlier camps. 160 Artificial Limbs and Calipers were repaired and distributed 17 Artificial Limbs and 10 Calipers from Jan to June 2021. These Assistive Devices are helpful for their mobility in their day to day life.

Challenges faced and next steps

  1. Field level camps could not be organized due to Covid-19 pandemic crises especially from March to June 2021.2. Most of the PwDs could not reach our Centre for any repairs or new assistive devices due to imposition of lockdown and lack of proper public transport facility. 3. During this period this organization has provided Dry Ration Kits to poor and needy PwDs those who have lost their livelihood with the support of various donors mobilized by this organization. Since we have taken special permission for vehicle passes from the district administration for distribution of Dry Ration Kits, we have utilized the same for identifying the new PwDs for Assistive Devices and provided repairs for already using assistive devices. 4. As of now Government authorities has been permitted to conduct the camps for Screening and Identification of PwDs for the requirement of Assistive Devices. Accordingly, we have planned to conduct 3 camps per month Mandal wise. The Disabilities may occur at any age but become more common as people get older. Most of the people with disabilities have the inherent potential to lead their life independently, but they are living dependent on their families due to lack of functional Mobility, Functional Vision, Functional Hearing etc, which is required to execute the activities. The provision of suitable aids & appliances may helpful to restore people with disabling disorders to their optimum level of function and wellbeing and can improve the quality of life (which includes those things that make life worth living or which give fulfilment). The suitable aids & appliances can also help to improve functions — by allowing people to perform ‘basic’ activities, such as becoming mobile or self-caring or doing everyday tasks.
